Mechanical Failure Ends Day Early for GR Smith

Salem, IN (4-26-05) – This year’s Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200 by Federated Auto Parts marked the 74th appearance of the ARCA RE/MAX Series at Salem.  But for GR Smith, a Veteran of DIRT big block and sportsman modifieds, it was his first time racing at Salem Speedway.

GR Smith, the 23-year-old Folsom, New Jersey native, qualified 18th.  “The car was running ok.  We didn’t qualify that great because we had the wrong gear in the car. I wasn’t happy with the qualifying effort,

but I feel we could have qualified top 10 with a different gear.  I think the lack of experience and having not run this track before contributed to where we qualified.”

But still GR Smith was confident that they could finish in the top 10.  “We had a pit strategy going that was working well for us.”

The race was going well for GR’s first time at Salem Speedway.  Then on lap 92 the engine seized up ending the day early for the team and giving them a DNF.  “Something major happened to the engine.  I think we lost the head gasket.  All at once we lost all the water.”

GR Smith finished 27th in the ARCA REMAX Ford Dealers 200.  “We need to stop these equipment failures so that we can have a good run and show what we can do.”

Next Race:  ARCA REMAX Kentucky Speedway-Harley-Davidson of Cincinnati 150 on May 14th
